Tikait first became a significant figure in 1987 when he organised a campaign in Muzaffarnagar demanding the waiving of electricity bills for farmers.
Boat Club Rally:::
Tikait's most spectacular show was at Delhi's Boat Club lawns in 1988 when nearly five lakhfarmers from Uttar Pradesh occupied the entire stretch from Vijay Chowk to India Gate. Delhi's power elite held out until the political pressure became too much to handle and after a week, the Rajiv Gandhi government bowed to his 35-point charter of demands that included higher prices for sugarcane and the waiving of electricity and water charges for farmers.
Lucknow, 1990::::
In July 1990, Tikait protested in Lucknow with over two lakh farmers, urging the Government of Uttar Pradesh to concede to the farmers' demand for higher sugarcane prices and heavy rebates in electricity dues. The pressure tactics worked and the then Janata Dal-controlled government bowed to the demands.
Lucknow, 1992:::
In 1992, Tikait was back in Lucknow to stage a month-long sit-in panchayat in pursuance of his demand for writing off farmers' loans up to Rs 10,000. The same year, he launched a Farmers Land Compensation Movement in Ghaziabad, seeking higher compensation towards the acquired land of farmers.[4]
Bijnore, 2008 - Remarks against Mayawati:::
Tikait was arrested on several occasions, the last being on 2 April 2008 for allegedly making derogatory and caste-based remarks against the then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati at a rally in Bijnore on 30 March 2008. It took a contingent of 6,000 armed policemen to lay a siege around his village for his arrest. 1992 में, टिकैत 10,000 रुपये तक के किसानों के ऋणों को लिखने की उनकी मांग के अनुसरण में एक महीने की बैठकर पंचायत करने के लिए लखनऊ में वापस आ गए थे। उसी वर्ष, उन्होंने गाजियाबाद में एक किसान भूमि मुआवजा आंदोलन शुरू किया, जो किसानों की अधिग्रहित भूमि के लिए उच्च मुआवजे की मांग कर रहा था। [४]
बिजनौर, 2008 - मायावती के खिलाफ टिप्पणी
टिकैत को कई मौकों पर, 2 अप्रैल 2008 को कथित तौर पर 30 मार्च 2008 को बिजनौर की एक रैली में उत्तर प्रदेश की तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री मायावती के खिलाफ अपमानजनक और जाति-आधारित टिप्पणी करने के लिए गिरफ्तार किया गया था। इसने 6,000 सशस्त्र पुलिसकर्मियों की टुकड़ी ले ली थी। उसकी गिरफ्तारी के लिए उसके गाँव के चारों तरफ घेराबंदी कर दी। मुख्यमंत्री से माफी मांगने के बाद ही उन्हें रिहा किया गया। [४] [६] जब चीजें सामान्य हुईं, तो मायावती ने शोक संदेश में टिकैत को किसानों का सच्चा और प्रतिबद्ध नेता बताया।
